Ep 131:The Dig

The Dig

ONE OF THE BETTER EXISTENTIAL ARCHAEOLOGY DRAMAS

The Cinemondo Excavators and their special guest, Lisa Fancher, dig deep into a lovely true story, THE DIG, based on the infamous Sutton Hoo excavation. It was one of the greatest archaeological finds in British history, and changed historians’ view of the Dark Ages

It takes place in 1939 on a picturesque estate where more than just ancient relics are uncovered. A great cast and an unexpectedly moving story bring this world to life and as the characters carefully unearth evidence of past cultures, they uncover important things about themselves. THE DIG gets into the big questions about life and death and history and the future and how lives that intersect can sometimes have a profound impact. Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan head an excellent cast in this bittersweet and somewhat melancholy drama that beautifully shot and staged and takes place just before the horrors of World War II change everything for everyone. It’s a thoughtful and intelligent film with an uplifting message.
